Yawa - Yet another weather app
Introduction
Yawa retrieves weather and tide prediction data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) public APIs and Internet services based on your current location or a location of your choice within the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Guam.
Disclaimer. Yawa and Tekaym Mobile are neither endorsed by nor affiliated with NOAA. This information is provided "as-is" and any and all warranties, whether express or implied, including (without limitation) any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose are disclaimed.
Yawa makes use of several NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) non-operational/non-production web services. As such, these services are not guaranteed to be available at all times.
Yawa contains no ads and is free to use.
Requirements
Yawa requires the following capabilities and permissions in order to provide accurate weather information for your location:
Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or greater
Internet access
GPS sensor hardware with location services enabled
Precise location permission*
*Yawa will continue to operate without location permission but will be unable to provide weather information for your current location.
Features
Location
By default, if Location permission has been granted, Yawa will display the current weather conditions and forecast for the NWS 2.5 km2 gridpoint at the last known location of the phone. The location can be changed by tapping the current location name at the top of the screen and searching for a specific City, St or Zipcode. Alternatively, select the Locations option from the main menu to select a saved location.
My location - tap this icon to retrieve the forecast for the device's current location. This depends on the availability of GPS and/or network location providers and the appropriate permissions.
Refresh - tap this icon to refresh the current location. Occasionally, Yawa is unable to retrieve data due to an internal NOAA server error. Typically, a refresh will correct the problem.
Add - tap this icon to add the current location to, and/or select from, a list of saved locations. Use the locations dialog to add/update/delete locations. Long press a location to display a context menu allowing the location to be edited or deleted.
Tap the observation station name at the top of the current observations tab to display a list of nearby observation stations sorted by increasing distance. Select any observation station in the list to retrieve the forecast and current conditions at the location of the selected station.
Tabbed layout
Swipe left or right to cycle between Current, Daily, Hourly, Radar, Alerts, Discussion, Sun & Moon, Tides, Satellite and Map tabs.
Current
Displays the current conditions reported by the closest NWS observation station. Observations stations are typically found at local airports. Occasionally, observation stations go offline and report null values.
Current temperature is color coded using the following temperature gradient with cooler temperatures on the left and warmer temperatures on the right.
Wind chill and Heat index are only accurate for temperatures below 50 and above 80 respectively.
The "Feels like" temperature uses R. G. Steadman's 1984 formula based on temperature, humidity, and wind speed for apparent temperature outdoors in the shade.
Sun rise/set and moon rise/set times are displayed for the current location.
The date and time of last update are reflected at the bottom of the screen.
Speak icon - tap this icon to listen to the forecast.
Map icon - tap this icon in the lower right corner of the current conditions tab to go directly to the Map component.
Daily
Displays daily and nightly forecasts for the next seven days. Tap a forecast item to display a detailed forecast for the period.
Hourly
Displays hourly forecasts for the next seven days.
Radar
By default, displays the animated radar image from the closest radar station. Use the drop down list to select and display a regional radar image.
Alerts
Displays watches, warnings, advisories for the current zone. A red warning symbol is superimposed on the current weather icon whenever an alert is present.
Discussion
Displays a discussion of the current area forecast from the local weather service forecast office. In addition, National Short Range, Extended, Tropical Weather, and Space Weather forecasts are available through the drop-down list.
Sun & Moon
Displays sun rise/set and moon rise/set times at the current location for the next 30 days.
Tides
Displays a list of all NOAA tide prediction stations within a 25 mile radius. Tide prediction stations are typically found in coastal areas, bays and rivers that are subject to tidal action. Tide heights are relative to Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW). Tap a tide station to display today's tides. Tap the Predictions button to display the predicted tides for the next 30 days.
Satellite
Displays the latest NOAA GOES-East and GOES-West satellite images for the Continental United States (CONUS), Pacific United States (PACUS), Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean.
Map
Display a map of nearby weather, radar, and tide prediction observation stations.
Long press at any desired location on the map to reset the currently selected location and query for nearby observation stations.
Marker - tap a marker to display detailed information provided by the weather station (green), radar station (purple), tide prediction station (blue), or zone forecast alert (red).
Menu - tap the menu icon in the upper left corner to enable or disable display of weather, radar or tide prediction stations as well as forecast alerts.
Set Location - tap this icon in the lower left corner to restart Yawa using the currently selected location.
